Winter Break begins at noon Friday!

The cake says it all. Yesterday, our students surprised Willy during silent meeting with a delightful video that students had made, a scrapbook of well-wishing messages, and a yummy cake. I promised Willy that there would be no more celebrations in her honor. At this point, we will just say, THANK YOU!

Bob's Physics class got so involved in and excited about their lab today that they got permission to skip their next class so they could continue with their work. I found it impossible to capture their excitement with my camera. Here are a few photos of Bob and his actively engaged students...

HAPPY HAPPY HOLIDAY from the Upper School. We wish you all a joyful and restful time with your families.

Thank you Upper School parents!

Our US Santa Claus students delivered surprise gift cards to our staff today. What fun! We are so grateful to all of our US parents for the many, many gifts you give to us in so many ways. Thank you for sharing your precious children with us. Thank you for showing your appreciation in this wonderful and amazing way.
 Happy Holiday!
 Thank you very much!
Have a happy and wonderful winter break...

Last week before Winter Break

Happy Holiday from Willy's office window! The holiday spirit is alive and well in the Upper School. A variety of decorations can be found in various locations. As you can see, Willy's windows are covered with snowflakes--wishful thinking!
The Student Ambassadors wanted to do something for the Earlham College community as they mourn the loss of 2 of their students. (One of their students was Lenore Edwards, CFS grad.)
They came up with the idea of making beaded bracelets, with a card that says, "Carolina Friends School community holding the Earlham community in the light."
Last Friday, we set up a workshop in the Meeting Hall. Many staff members and students stopped by to make bracelets.
We sent well over 100 bracelets to Earlham this week.
Willy and Marybeth at the parent reception for Willy. She only has 4 1/2 days left!
Frances's Biology students are using their new computerized equipment to work with DNA. Very exciting!
Prof. E.O. Wilson and Dr. Meg Lowman (aka Canopy Meg).  She is the Director of the new NC Nature Research Center at NC Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh.  Frances met her in Peru last summer.

Thursday afternoon twenty-one advanced biology students, together with Peggy, Rob and Frances, spent the afternoon at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh where we were invited to participate in a presentation on biodiversity by Prof. E.O. Wilson in the Daily Planet Theater.  It was exciting to be invited and to participate in this event.  We were asked to submit questions for the Q&A session and were delighted that four of our twelve questions were chosen for the event, though there was time for only three to be answered -- those submitted by Rhiannon, Molly, and Tyler.  It was particularly interesting because several of our students, including Molly and Tyler, took the class Sustaining Life in the fall term when we spent the first two weeks of term discussing the topic of biodiversity.

Week of November 19, 2012 (gobble, gobble)

Here is a great picture (thanks to Brian Whittier) of Jamie and his Ethics Bowl team...actually two teams. Jamie's teams competed in a regional Ethics Bowl competition this past weekend at UNC-CH. Although our students did a great job, they lost in the quarter final match to East Chapel Hill High who went on to win the tournament. Our students had beat ECHH earlier in the day during Round Robin play. Congratulations to Jamie and his students!
As I hope you have heard, our Fall Symposium was a rousing success! Here, you can see Philip Gary introducing our three visiting ambassadors. Each ambassador gave a 20-minute introduction on Understanding North Korea, The Middle East, and Emerging Africa. Students then split into three Q&A groups with each ambassador.
Here are a group of our students meeting with Ambassador John Sylvester about North Korea.
The International Potluck was delicious! Thanks to all who contributed to this great meal.
As you might imagine, Kaira Ba, Jonathan Henderson's Senegalese band, was a big hit. They did manage to get everyone up and dancing.

RISERS NIGHT
On Thursday, November 29, we will welcome Middle School 4th year students and their parents for our Upper School Risers Night. We look forward to an evening full of information sharing. The 4th years will go through an abbreviated class schedule while parents will meet with some staff members in the Meeting Hall. We look forward to welcoming the 4th years and their parents to the Upper School.

OPEN HOUSE
Our CFS Open House is Sunday afternoon, December 2, from 2-4pm. We will make an informational presentation about the Upper School in the Meeting Hall at 2:30. Please encourage any interested folks to attend.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL! HAVE A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY WITH FAMILY.
