Internship News 5.29.13

Here is a beautiful photo of our beach service group riding horses along the beach. Wow! Meanwhile, Jon will be spending this week visiting some of our students who are experiencing local internships. As a result of Jon's visits, I will be able to share this exciting educational work on my blog.

Eliza is shadowing an MFA student at Duke University’s Center for Documentary Studies.  In addition, Eliza is taking a photography class to learn more about black & white photography.  During this internship, Eliza has been able to learn a lot more about the various facets of being a photographer, especially in terms of the editing and developing stage of creating a photograph.  While Eliza has grown up around art, this opportunity has given her the chance to engage more fully as a producer of that art and has given her new insights into art itself.
Eliza has also been able to accompany her father—a photographer who founded the CDS—on a current project related to the Durham Bulls’ stadium.  Eliza will be taking a portrait of a couple who have been longtime attendees at the baseball games as part of this project (which will in part result in a book about the stadium).  Eliza notes that she anticipates art will always be a part of her life; this internship is giving her a chance to delve more deeply into the lives of professional artists and helping her understand more fully how art will be a part of her life.

Olivia fell in love with the Student U program after learning of it from her mother, when her mother served as one of the staff members in last summer’s program.  Olivia has been completing a lot of administrative work during her internship, which has ranged from filing student information to preparing teaching materials for the teachers when their orientation begins in June.  She has been thrilled to be a part of the team and has been impressed at how successful the team has been given how relatively new and relatively small the organization is.

Student U (from their website) collaborates with families, community members and partner organizations to create a continuum of services for students from the summer before sixth grade until their high school graduation.  Through summer and after school academic programming, as well as in-school advocacy and support, Student U’s goal is that all students graduate from high school with their cohort with the ability to succeed in college. Our pipeline consists of both Middle School and High School programming.

MORE TO COME ON THESE AMAZING INTERNSHIPS...
